African spotted-necked otter

African spotted-necked otters, the most aquatic of all the African otter species, are named for the spattering of spots on their neck and chest area (and sometimes on their belly). The spot patterns are unique to each individual. Smaller than sea otters, they have slim bodies and long, tapering tails. Their feet—fully covered with webbing—have long, strong claws.


These freshwater otters live in continuous waterways such as lakes, rivers and swamps that have large areas of open water surrounded by canopies of dense vegetation.
